Yes, this is real.

Reports vary on whether Gaiman owns Angela in full, or if the rights are split between him and Todd McFarlane, or if Marvel bought the character outright.

IGN has an article on it as well.

I'm really surprised by this, but it sounds like it could be pretty awesome.

I didn't know Marvel was so interested in the character. Call me ignorant but, why exactly is this so important to Marvel that they wanted to reveal her in an event comic? Is there some back story here I don't know about, it just seems kind of random.

It's Neil Gaiman. Short of Alan Moore, thats as big a name as Marvel could get. Getting him invloved with their books will generate some big interest. Whether that interest is deserved is something else entirely.

Marvel's forgetting a couple things--first--it's not 1993--and second--nobody gives a shit about Angela if she's not being drawn by Todd McFarlane and she's not hunting Spawns. Remember when Marvel bought Marvelman and everybody went ape-shit for his triumphant return?

Neither do I!

To nobody's surprise--when you take away everything about a character that made them fresh, cool and exciting--they're no longer fresh, cool and exciting!

Maybe they could arrange to have WildC.A.T.S. drop by too. What an absolute thrill THAT would be--to see it drawn by somebody other than Jim Lee and published in a year other than 1992.

But seriously--how does Neil or Marvel come out of this looking good? How do they spin this as a genuinely good and creative idea and not have it look as though they're doing this just to be dicks to Todd?

Yeah, can't really see how angela works in the marvel U. I guess if they were going to do a major relaunch of doctor strange/blade/tomb of dracula they could involve Mephisto but then he becomes the malebolgia. I don't see how angela fits in with the avengers or ultron and is still angela. Makes about as much sense as Vampirella in an avengers book. Why not just create a new character worth a crap?

I guess this will really assure we never see another Todd Mcfarlane/marvel project. Always wanted to see todd do a spidey/venom story.

Well, at the end of the Angela mini by Gaiman and Capullo she had basically severed ties with Heaven and become a cosmic bounty hunter. Seems like that would fit fine into GotG.

As far as i can gather, she will just appear in the epilogue of AoU before taking her main role in GotG for however long this deal is for.

Im not particularly against this, even as a Spawn fan (characters been dead since #100 anyway), but I do question what the point really is. Angelas not really a big name character. Even in he Spawn-verse shes only had fleeting appearences.
The bigger news is Gaiman returning to Marvel.
Angela is just kinda... there.

Okay, now that I know there is not some big piece of information I'm missing about there being a good solid reason as to Angela being in the marvel universe, this is a little ridiculous.

I have to agree that if Angela is not doing what the character is known for and there's no spawn in sight that's definitely odd and kind of pointless. After doing some research it seems Gaiman owns the right to Angela now and Mcfarlane doesn't? This is kind of weird to say the least.

Did Gaiman sell his rights to the character to marvel?

The only flip side to this is maybe some readers will be curious about Angela and pick up some Spawn comics, there could be a silver lining.

It's all about squeezing a press release and a bit hype out of this. Like almost everthing that's done by Marvel nowadays. It's not "What can we do with this". It's only "How can we market it".

Neil Gaiman, the novelity of a character from another company brougth to Marvel, and a bit of 90ies nostalgia, and fanboys are all hyped up. That a year from now, nobody will remeber this, doesn't matter. Hell, this is aimed at the same people that still get bend out of shape if one character "dies".
