You make some great points, Brightraven. I think that there is a whole lot more that the retailer could do to promote a broad and diverse selection of comics. I saw the other threads you mentioned as well.
The boys club mentality of the comics retailer alienates potential consumers of nontraditional/non-superhero content. There is a world of alternative and international material that is under represented in the typical comic book store. On the other hand, I can't help but believe that these comics stores are only offering the types of material that they see actually moving. No retailer wants to sit on alternative material for months in the hopes that they'll attract new consumers.
It seems to me that the typical comics retailer will only look at their short-term interests for the most practical reasons, limited investment capital, meeting payroll, etc. I think if this alternative model that we would all ideally like to see out there is successful in the marketplace, it will be mirrored. But, I just don't see the motivational forces in play to make that happen.
