Great review, Jim. Good info. My local comic shop guys says he's been around for around sixteen years. In all that time, he's never ordered a recent Marvel/DC comic. He's only got Marvel/DC for the quarter bin. Or, if it's a classic, then he sells it in the classics. Otherwise, he's got even the most obscure indie.

Despite how bad off comic book shops are these days financially, many actually take some chances putting out lesser known stuff. You'd think they be conservative, but most of the comic shops I've been to sell hard to find stuff, including stuff from Europe. I've learned something: it's not the comic shop owners who are conservative so much as it is the fans. Fans will complain about Marvel/DC putting out junk, then ignore the indie and continue to buy Marvel/DC. It's ridiculous.

Sometimes it seems like I'm one of the few who knows there are better options for comics than Marvel/DC.

What's funny about 2000 AD is, in a single weekly comic you essentially have the sort of freelance editorial controlled system Marvel and DC use. BUT, instead of being heavy handed about editorial mandates, and requiring everything be part of a shared universe they let their creators run with the ball in their own court. 2000 AD takes chances on new creators, and new ideas (while to be fair, they definitely have there stable of 'old standbys' Judge Dredd being the biggest, to fall back on), they aren't afraid to have events with lasting impacts in their stories, or tell long running yet FINITE stories. You know, with an ending in mind, and not just go on forever (standbys notwithstanding). So in a single issue you get a sense of long running tradition and cutting edge new ideas, if one doesn't work for you, there are 4 more to try.

It's like that expression "everything is awesome and no one is happy". I have a great shop loaded with variety. I never read the main 2 unless I choose too. I have more good comics to choose from than I could ever afford. The variety is definitely out there if you want it.

Oh hell yes it is. *laments his 'New Golden Age of Comics' rants having been lost to the forum wipe*

I think that's why I've been vigilant for the last year to keep my Signiture up to date with new releases. I just love the variety I'm getting these days.

Sooo... after quite a wait*, and the release of DREDD looming in September, we're finally starting to get some real promotion out of Lion's gate. First up is Karl Urban in all his Judge Dredd glory.

*holy tap dancing Christ, I created this thread nearly a year ago, that was the last time there was real Dredd news to report!

Next we have the OFFICIAL movie poster, which just looks smashing, if I do say so.

(check out that R rating. Yessssssssssss)

And finally, recently John Wagner (creator, and lead comic writer, of Judge Dredd) got to watch a very nearly finished cut of the film. He had this to say.

Quote:
“I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I’ve had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them – a little quibble at the beginning – have been addressed. And what a lot they’ve added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I’ve not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes. Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done – true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you’ll let me know what you think when you’ve seen it, but this has my recommendation.”

Apparently his 'little quibble' is how boring looking these trucks look in this officially released still frame.

So if the creator of Dredd (and one of my favorite comic writers btw) says this film captures the spirit of the original, I'm sold!

No trailer yet, but with the promotional machine finally turning, it can't be far away.

Not, entirely sure the slo-mo is going to do any favors. But apparently it actually has an in-movie reason for being.

That's Karl Urban? From what little I can see of his face it seems pudgier.

In case anyone's wondering why I keep harping on this movie (other then Dredd being my 2nd favorite comic character ever, after Dragon. And anyone who likes Dragon should like Dredd.). Dredd was made on a $30Million budget. And if we ever see a Savage Dragon movie, I suspect it will be made in that range as well. So its worth keeping a close eye on how Dredd is handled, and what kind of reception it gets. Who knows, maybe badass super-cops will become a thing!

Hope this is good.

Urban looks to be a good Dredd and they have Cersei playing the main villain. Coming out in September too. Not that far off.

The only thing that Dragon and Dredd have in common are being cops in a crime-infested world. All the similarities between the two stories are superficial. Oh, and the fact that they are both ongoing person by the same creator since issue one. But Dragon is real different from Dredd. In fact, the storytelling in SD is real different from the Dredd stories. So I think you're wrong on that part, Jim.
