Whatever the issue was 20 years ago, it was 20 years ago. I think Trio would be a perfect fit for Image Comics, but what do I know. All I know is that one of the covers has a pretty awesome looking creation of some kind of Nazi monster. At least Byrne is back at doing super heroes.
Still, if Byrne ever came to Image, then there would be a chance of him drawing Savage Dragon characters. That's all I want to see.
Trio looks awful to me. There's a preview here:

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.
THIS is why John Byrne should never ink himself. Or pick a colorist. Considering the subject matter at hand, he really should be discouraged toward writing his own work, too.
B L A N D. Staggeringly B O R I N G.
AND JUST PLAIN DUMB. Rock-Paper-Scissors heroes? The man has officially run out of any creative ideas of substance. This is regurgitated crap that he's done so many times before, but this time with no energy. No spontaneity.
You could make your own John Byrne comic book from all the standard John Byrne 'template' shots that look like all the OTHER John Byrne camera shots from the last several decades. His work hasn't had any actual gravitas since...? Now his work is all flat, lifeless carbon copies of a prominent career long since gone by the wayside.
I truly want Byrne to do a huge amount of work only in pencil, having any choice of an inker, colorist, or him being able to write what he draws taken away from him, to be put in the hands of someone who will want to pair him up with an inker that would COMPLIMENT his work (rather than to blandly trace over it as Byrne does to himself). To pair him up with a colorist who has SOME sense of depth and dimension.
That shitty FLAT Photoshop texture/color for the 'Rock' character IS A LAME AMATEURISH JOB! Not worthy of Byrne's legacy of old. Not worthy of a comic book newbie, just starting to get his feet wet in the comics industry, either. INEXCUSABLE.
Instead, Byrne finds himself encased inside his own 'ego bubble', producing nothing but the same old schlocky shit. Always doing the same old same old same old SAME OLD LIFELESS CRAP that is easily mistaken for every other same old lifeless crap he's been producing for decades now.
Rob Liefeld cannot draw the paper bag that he cannot draw his way OUT of, unless Arthur Adams or Jim Lee draws it first, so he can swipe it! Having said that, I truly believe that - AS SHITTY AS LIEFELD'S WORK IS - his figure penciling has more life to it than John Byrne's current crop of crap work over the last several decades. Sure, Byrne has the ability to do the same old same old same old SAME OLD BORING LOOKING BUILDINGS time after time after time (ad nauseum), but overall, Byrne's work simply looks like it's been phoned in by a drained narcoleptic.
It looks as if Byrne's ego has relegated him to a lonely corner of the comics industry, not ever allowing him to produce any comics of quality anymore, all the while losing more and more artistic/creative energy as time goes by.
He and his work can be rehabilitated, but there's simply no way Byrne's ego will allow him to pull his head out of his ass.
There is no good reason to waste any money on a John Byrne-produced comic book.
YUCK.
There's little I can add. I was a huge fan, years ago, and his work these days just does nothing for me. It looks like he's sleepwalking through these pages. It's all the same stuff we've seen but that much less interesting.
