The new restrictions on Avatars (under 90x90 pixels and/or under 6kbs in size) made getting my avatar back up a bit of a chore.

TIPS to get your image under 6kbs: If you're using Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.net for image editing, make sure you change the image mode to 'Indexed Colors'. This will let you save only the colors that appear in the image, which will trim down the file size by a lot. Save as a PNG. You'll probably have to play around with the image size a bit too, I think mine ended up 80x80 at 5.45kbs in the end.

If you're still having trouble, upload you're original image with Imageshack and link it here, and I'll see what I can do.

Adding to what Jim mentioned, there's the handy "Save For Web and Devices" feature in Photoshop that will let you knock your PNG, GIF or JPG file down to as few colors as you wish to keep the file size down.
