Yeah. They were ALSO SIDE BY SIDE when I was settin' em up. Dunno why they're on top of one another.

There are enough differences to make these inspired by, but it's unmistakable:

Sorry for the tiny picture, but this one is kind of important, so I wanted to post it. I just saw this in a Heritage Auctions email and this was as big as the picture got- apparently the cover of All American Comics 16 (1st appearance of the Golden Age Green Lantern) was possibly swiped from a panel from a January 1939 Flash Gordon panel:

Not as shocking as finding out that the 1st story with Batman (from Detective Comics 27) was totally swiped from a story from The Shadow, but still very interesting.

This does not surprise me.
There was a LOT of swiping (most from Alex Raymond) in the Golden Age.

Nor does it surprise me that Detective 27 was swiped in it's entirety (or close to it).
That said, please reference this for us.

Not that I don't believe it, Mr. Kane was well disliked for his ability to take undeserved credit.
I'd just like to know where you got your information from and, if possible, see examples.

Jim-

I should have been more specific- the person swiping on Detective 27 was not Bob Kane as much as it was Bill Finger. When I said that first story was swiped, I meant the actual script

Shadow expert Anthony Tollin speaks on the matter here and gives specifics:

http://www.comicmix.com/news/2007/06/24 ... syndicate/

Here's one of Tollin's statements from the link:

"A few months back, Will Murray reminded me of Bill Finger’s quote that his first Batman "script was a take-off on a Shadow story." (from Steranko’s History of the Comics Volume One) I kept thinking about it and it occurred to me that nobody had ever bothered to find out which "Shadow story" was lifted. I suggested that to Will over the phone one night, and with his assistance I had found the story in less than 20 minutes. Will and I each had ideas as to which stories it couldn’t be, so it became a process of elimination. We had both thought it would be a lot harder than it was. I had expected the lift to be less blatant. It turned out to be the same story with basically nothing changed. I mean, it was a chemical syndicate in both stories! Finger didn’t even change it to some other kind of business. And The Shadow is described as "bat-like" in the rooftop scene where Batman makes his first appearance in costume."

Speaking of Bob Kane though, his participation in the creation of Batman is questioned heavily in this comment by Tollin:

"It also raises questions about the extent of Bob Kane’s actual contributions to the feature that bears his creator credit. If Finger’s first Batman script was a blatant retelling of an earlier Shadow novel, and Finger also suggested the Caped Crusader’s bat-eared cowl, bat-scalloped cape, black-and-gray costume and utility belt, what did Kane personally contribute to the feature besides its title? And as to Kane’s claims that Douglas Fairbank’s acrobatics in The Mark of Zorro were an influence, it now turns out that it was movie-buff Bill Finger who regularly supplied the acrobatic stills of Fairbanks to Bob Kane and his assistants."

The original Shadow story in question- "Partners of Peril"- can be purchased here:

Some of this stuff is a stretch, but here's a couple interesting links that have a handful of side by side comparisons concerning The Shadow story "Partners of Peril" and the Batman story in Detective Comics 27. There are art comparisons and story/text comparisons:

As far as Alex Raymond swiping goes, here's something first pointed out in Alter Ego #5 (1999) that I had forgotten about- a panel from the January 17, 1939 Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip (by Alex Raymond) which might have been swiped for the cover to Detective 27. One of those links I provided shows another character swipe from the cover (the thug in the bottom left corner)- but I think that one is reaching a bit (I don't see it personally). Once again, sorry for the small pics:

All looks pretty close to my eyes.

And, even though we call all of the homage covers "swipes" these are GENUINE SWIPES...
that is, taking someone else's work and passing it off as your own.

Why did we call them "swipe" covers and not homage covers?
Because when we started this way back when Jimmy Lee still had Homage studios and I didn't want to cause any confusion.

Maybe I'll change that!
