My plan was to take the book to issue #51 and then turn it over…unless more ideas came to me. Had I continued I was fairly certain that I wanted to do at least a full year wherein they met no one with ANY ties to the Marvel Universe. I wanted them to encounter new aliens, new villains and new worlds.

But, then again, I knew there was a story with Yondu and his god, Anthos (who some bright reader pointed out was an anagram for Thanos).
I wanted to introduce Her, the female Warlock into the Galactic Guardians (who were real short of female members) and reveal that SHE was actually Protégé’s mother (the story that Interface told in #15 or 16—can’t remember which, wasn’t true—it was just the story the Church told about the child’s origin).

I wanted to do a story set 500 years in the future featuring the team the Guardians would become, thus honoring my promise to Tom DeFalco when he first gave me the green light for this series.
The story would have featured a Guardians that was thousands of members strong divided into smaller sub-groups each with their own sector (so, think the Green Lantern Corps if they were the Legion). Our story would have focused on an “Alpha” team consisting of Aleta (team leader), her current husband, Adam (The aforementioned Mr. Warlock as he appeared at the end of Avengers Annual #7), Starhawk (I figured by this time he’d be less of a jerk) and several new characters (most whom I have used or will use in my various Image books).
The story was about their uncovering a group of Guardians misusing their power and their authority to enslave worlds, setting themselves up as dictators and demi-Gods. The Guards would find several more groups as they traced the source of this abuse of power back to the Homeworld and the very hierarchy of the organization. So, it would have been a political conspiracy story in spandex, I guess.

AND ONE LAST THING:

In Sonic the Hedgehog #103 (January, 2002), Michael Gallagher (he who followed me as writer on the Guardians) and I did a spoof of the team called the “Freedom Fighters of the Galaxy.” I drew the first of the two-part story (I didn’t finish it due to a faux pas that Michael had made concerning Nikki’s hair—I know, I know, temperamental artists). The Sonic characters took on the roles of the Guardians (Sonic himself was Vance, Antoine-Yondu, Rooter-Charlie, Princess Sally-Aleta and so on). It was a bit of fun that went under everyone’s radar.

As threatened, this is the series proposal I sent into Marvel last September (2004).
I would note, for the record, that Marvel decided NOT to read it, therefore I feel it's perfectly okay to post it here.
It is NOT going to happen. I offer it here only as a coda to the above retrospective:
(Note, all titles derived from science-fiction short-stories and novels)

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Series proposal by
Jim Valentino

Just as the Squadron Supreme was re-envisioned for SUPREME POWER, so too should the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY be re-started from day one. Fifteen year old, abandoned continuity services no one and the series, created in 1969, is saddled with a lot of bad science (exo-geology, the study of other worlds, has made a lot of advances in the ensuing 35 years).

By turning up the volume on this book (think Authority/Ultimates) it would appeal to a more modern sensibility. By maintaining the spirit of the series and the characterization of the principal characters, it won’t disenfranchise older readers. That said, depending on the needs of the company, it can also be easily converted to the all-ages MARVEL AGE approach and be used as a plot bible for a television show (the unique physical appearance of the individual Guardians would easily lend themselves to a toy line replete with weapons, vehicles, etc…). In either case, the high concept remains the same:

THEY HAVE THE CHARACTERIZATION OF STAR TREK
WITH THE ACTION AND DANGER OF STAR WARS

Attached are my initial ideas for the first six-issue story arc and a brief character synopsis of the individual Guardians.

ARC ONE:

“THE FUTURE IN QUESTION”

#1. “The End of Eternity”

In the late 21st Century, Astronaut, botanist, zoologist MAJOR VANCE ASTRO (A descendant of the Avenger, Justice) is sent to Centauri IV, the first Earth-like extra-solar planet discovered. His consciousness is placed in an android body (based on Prof. Horton’s designs) to survive the long journey through space. But, upon his arrival, nearly 1000 years later, he discovers that Earthmen have already colonized the planet, faster-than-light travel having been discovered during his long journey. Determined to continue his original mission, he sets off into the wild, there to encounter a Centaurian native, YONDU. Yondu was on his Hakta (or Walkabout), the final step toward his becoming Habaktu (warrior-priest). While the pair are in the mountains the Brotherhood of the Badoon attacked, destroying all of the Earth-based stations (the Centaurians are akin to the Amerinds and do not possess technology of their own) and enslaving the populace. Fearing a similar attack on the Earth, Vance is determined to warn his home planet, convincing the reluctant Yondu to accompany him in breeching the Badoon perimeter.

#2. “Very Far Away From Anywhere Else”

Europa: Central Command has lost all contact with Earth’s outpost on Centauri IV. As home base for the solar system’s Militia (comprised of bio-engineered clones, hense the numeric appellations) they issue an Orange Alert. Captain CHARLIE-27’s unit is sent to guard the scientific outpost on Pluto/Charon. Meanwhile, the Badoon capture Vance and Yondu and offer the former a cloned body if he’ll betray his people and side with them.
The Badoon fleet flanks the Solar System, attacking from opposite ends of the Solar System (Mercury and Pluto/Charon), decimating the Jovian fleet patrolling the Solar System’s perimeter. Captain 27’s fighter ship is shot down and crash lands near Pluto’s Tambaugh University where he is rescued by a Pluvian scientist, MARTINEX.

#3. “Farewell To Eden”

On Pluto/Charon, Charlie and Martinex escape the obliteration of the twin worlds, while on Mercury a young girl, NIKKI, watches as her family is killed and her city destroyed by the invading Badoon. A resourceful fighter and skilled marksman, she avoids being captured or killed by the Badoon, who are rounding up all surviving Mercurians to become their slaves.
Meanwhile, on Centauri IV, Vance fakes the Badoon out by telling them he will turn traitor to humanity and he and Yondu manage to escape, commandeering a Badoon flyer to take them to Earth. On Mercury, the building in which Nikki is hiding is destroyed and she is, apparently, killed.

#4. “Almost the End of the World”

The Badoon, having conquered Mercury and destroyed Pluto/Charon, begin moving their fleet toward the center of the Solar System, there to surround the Earth. General Ken-17 gives the order to protect the homeworld, even at the possible cost of Europa. The Badoon, on their way in to the heart of the Solar System, destroy the Jovian moon (thus Earth’s Militia), completely obliterating it. The two teams of future Guardians (Vance and Yondu and Charlie and Marty) race toward Earth, the former team unaware of what has already happened. Meanwhile, a mysterious woman of great power, ALETA, rescues Nikki.

#5. “But, What of Earth?”

The Badoon fleet finally makes it to Earth, flanking the home world from all sides. There is massive destruction in the cities (think the first few issues of The Authority for the scale we’re talking about) and dog fights in space as the Earthmen attempt to protect their planet. The Guardians (in separate ships) join in the fray. Nikki implores Aleta to help, if she has the power. She doesn’t, but STARHAWK does (we witness the transformation here for the first time). Commander Drang of the Badoon orders his troops to secure the major cities of the planet (New York, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Moscow, etc). Meanwhile, in space, the two ships carrying the teams of soon-to-be Guardians are seemingly destroyed.

#6. “After Doomsday”

The Guardians have all been rescued by Starhawk (as The-One-Who-Knows he is aware that they will be the earth’s future salvation). He brings them to the Blue Area of the Moon where they meet one another and the Inhuman, TALON.
While on Earth, the Badoon complete their conquest of Earth, their plan being to use the humans and Mercurians as slave labor to strip both planets of their natural resources.
The Guardians will return to Earth, there to lead an underground resistance movement of freedom fighters against the Badoon while Starhawk goes into space in search of more powerful allies to help them liberate the planet.
The Beginning.

ARC TWO:

The resistance movement on Earth (helped by Talon’s connections) is founded and organized while Starhawk searches through space.

ARC THREE:

Starhawk brings cosmic level heroes back to Earth and the Earthling’s rally against their oppressors.

ARC FOUR:

The final battle for the Earth and the Badoon are routed.

Wow! This is a terrific read, and I'm not even halfway through it. I know Jim's a busy guy, but I'd love to see a retrospective/commentary like this for ShadowHawk one day. :)

I think I did one in The Return of ShadowHawk...or somewhere.

Guess I'll have to look.

Oops. That's right. There's "A Reader's Guide to ShadowHawk" in The Return of ShadowHawk. Forgot about that.

I was very (pleasantly) surprised to stumble upon this tonight:

Image

Rob Liefeld drawing a young Vance Astro for Jim/Rob's Young Avengers pitch. Apparently Rob commented on the pitch last year when Marvel put it online:

That was very nice of Rob.

I don't recall this drawing, but that's pretty much how I planned to have Vance look after giving up his Major Victory persona.
So, it probably stuck in my head somewhere.

With the current GOTG craziness going on over at Marvel I can't help but wonder "What about THE REAL Guardians of the Galaxy"???

Purely speculation here - but if the Guardians were to become as big as Marvel's hoping to push them (what with the upcoming Avengers 2 movie appearance and the proposed feature film) would it be that out of the question for them to have a second monthly title - penned by Sir Valentino? (of course!).

I'm looking at the shelves these days and seeing IDW reuniting Byrne, Hama, Eastman, Furman with their series (Next Men, GI JOE, Transformers Generation 1, TMNT) and I can't help but long for new Jim Valentino GOTG comics from Marvel. Is this completely out of the question? I heard at least there are plans for reprints of the 90s stuff.

Thoughts?

I think the best we'll see is their reprinting of my series, but even that seems doubtful.

Marvel has no interest in my take on the characters or in me as either writer or artist.
I think this was made abundantly clear by Bendis' recent interview about his take on the team (and he told me privately he WASN'T doing them).
And on the busts Randy Bowen did which featured the team in their Gerber era costumes with my stars (sigh).
This is the thing about corporate owned characters folks (and a BIG reason why we formed Image), regardless what you do, someone can come along and undo it.
I recently read a rather moronic quote from the guy who's writing the Guardians movie about Taserface.
Obviously, he didn't get it, which is okay.

I don't expect anything from the Guardians movie, nor should I. They were never my characters.
I only hope it's as entertaining as the Avengers movie was...and it would be super-nice if they reprinted my stuff and sent a nice royalty check! :)
