It began in February of 1992.

20 years later, Image is still going on strong.

Thank you Image Comics!

now let's play a guessing game at who's who... and mock them for their post-80's fashion sense...

I sadly don't know any of them... unless that's Jim Valentino bottom right.

Standing (left to right): Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, Jim Valentino.

Sitting (left to right): Hank Kanalz, Jim Lee.

Kanalz designed the Image "i" logo.

Would be cool to see the guys take a "20 years later" photo like this at the Image Expo later this month. And I just noticed Silvestri looks like he's holding a video camera. Perhaps they recorded some of their first meeting? But that would be a fun look back at the gang. :)

My formative years were spent transitioning from Marvel to Image (I was 9 goin' on 10 when you guys started up). I think it was such a wonderful age to watch it happen, because -- whether I liked it or not -- I was really exposed to the production side of comics. Before Image, I was buying Spider-Man for that Larsen Cyborg Spidey, and X-Men because of those Jim Lee covers (but I didn't know who Jim Lee was; Stan's son, right?) -- well, and because everyone kept saying to buy comics because they'll put your great great great great grandchildren through space college.

But then you guys spin off and form Image Comics, and what I noticed was a lot of coverage of the actual DUDES who were MAKING this stuff. I guess it hit me: real people are involved with the creation of comics, aren't they? So from then on, I kinda figured out what it meant to follow creators instead of just following characters.

I'm digressing to high Heaven here so let's sum this up: I want to thank Image Comics for being a catalyst and showing me that I should most definitely spend my entire life learning how to make comics for a job, because I keep returning to this exact medium for my creative outlet, as it's the only thing that satiates.

Happy twentieth.

I don't believe I posted this on this site.
I created this ad to show that Image was ALWAYS diverse, right from the start (or darn close to it).
I tried to include only one book per creator--but I thik the creator's represented some of the best in the biz over the last 20 years (see how many you can list).
At any rate:

Thats a great ad Jim. Lots of good books I forgot about. Like the Frank Frazetta books, I loved those. No shadowhawk or Skull-kickers though!

Thats a great ad - the only two downsides are a) it makes me feel old and b) I'm now tempted to go to the comic shop and buy some of those comics!
