As the anticipation for issue #8 builds I wanted to take a few minutes and talk about this volume as a whole so far.
The Templar creators took a huge risk this volume by removing the main protagonist and the main antogonist. I for one will admit that I was little scared as to how the story was going to flow after that was done. But it wasn't a detriment to the story at all. In fact I think it was one of the boldest moves I have seen in a story in a long time.
By removing Karic and King Icarus, Bryan was able to focus more on the ramifications of the actions these two characters had taken in the previous two volumes. He was also able to introduce us to the greater Templar world and the characters that fill that world. I feel like this took an already vibrant world that the team had built over the previous issues and make it even more alive. By moving the focus away from the immediate actions of the main characters we were given a look at how much actions and deeds effect this world, and be introduced to more of the supporting characters that inhabit it. These characters prove just as interesting and thought provoking as the characters that played large parts in the earlier issues.
But we weren't merely thrown a few new characters, Bryan brought back some characters that were introduced previously in the series. In doing this he allowed us to see the true nature of these characters. Pilot the Tall comes to mind in this instance. Where he was devious and self-consumed before we really weren't sure of the depths of his depravity. By bringing him back and seeing how he acted while with Leito really cements his character traits. It was little things like that make this volume really stand out. It wasn't just that we were looking at other characters that exist in the world, but they were fleshed out in an organic manner that really made this volume shine for me.
There were several other characters introduced and layers were added to them, and I hope to go back and write down some more thoughts on this volume soon. But suffice it to say the Templar world is filled with characters that jump off the page.
As this volume comes to a close I am looking forward to seeing how the story moves forward as I am sure it will.
More to come!! But I wanted to get some thoughts down while I was thinking about them.
