Jay, was this partially inspired by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? I mean, I know that was inspired by Boys in the Hood among others, and that you are capable of constructing a story on your own, but certain things just really put me in the game when reading this. Especially the "Shit's embarrassing!" line. Ryder says that in the game and I heard it from him in my mind when I read it.

Edit: Oops, Ryder never says those words directly together, but I still get the GTA vibe. :D You played it?

Nope -- the only GTA I've played is the most recent one, GTA IV. I love it! But this issue wasn't inspired by anything in particular.

I just wanted to give Markham someone to play off of -- another character who was turning his life around, but for different (more pure) reasons.

I have completely enjoyed this series from the beginning. I love the one and done aspect of it. The art is great and everything about the book is great.

I like how even though Markham is doing "good" things he hasn't really turned into a good person. It adds an element to the story that makes me wonder how long he'll be able to keep it up.

@Jay: How's Simone doing? is he keeping up so you don't have to hold any issues back?

Yep! Issue #8 will be later this month as scheduled, and he's just finishing up issue #10.

I finally got caught up on Near Death. After reading the first 3 issues it somehow started piling up, cause I wasn't reading many comics anymore, but still bought a lot.
Anyway, I got to say, I wasn't crazy about Near Death after the first issue, but it quickly became an incredible fun read. No baggage. No convoluted storyline, but a pay-off every issue. It really feels like a TV show. The art is fitting, and Under The Influence is a great insight in the mind of writer and a great source of information. Great to see that Jay loves Magnum PI as much as I do. This was truly TV at it's best.

Jay, is there an issue of ND where you discussed Breaking Bad? I seem to remember that, but I would have skipped over it because I hadn't gotten caught up until now. I'd like to go back and read it if there was.

Also, the latest reminded me of GTA: San Andreas again. That little cabin in the woods was just like one on Mount Chiliad. You must have sleep-played that game.

Nope, haven't written any columns about Breaking Bad.

Weird coincidence. The reference for that cabin came from a simple Google image seach.
