I pictured it being Smasher - his decent into a darker place and change from being the kid that got picked on to the tough guy. Sort of a sad story of of loss (without redemption)

Well who was most changed when the powers switched up? And which one was one of the fan favorites?

It could have been someone like War Chest. :shock:

I was pretty sure it was going to be one of the kids....

To also back my assumption, Smasher/Visionary's mom didn't really like the Dynamo 5 concept and if he died she could have become a vocal protestor of them team and tried to uncover them to the press. She could have become a villain in her own right.... I like where this is going

That's a good idea. But I don't see him getting killed. I would go with Scrap before him, just because she's the one that changed the most power wise, and still had a tendency to jump in fist first instead using her "new" power.

The reason I did not think it would be Scrap/Supervision because of the time Jay spent developing a relationship with the shady new guy. I think there was a a chance to build a storyline around his curiosity towards the team and he dilemma with liking him and not trusting his motives.

Another good point. That would have been an interesting plot line. But it could also be used the opposite. The team finds out about the relationship after she dies, and he infiltrates the team under the guise of despair. Then turns that around against the team. Sort of a psychogical attack. "You see what happened here? She died. And it's all ___________ fault." he says to the other team members. And switches it up for each one. Pretty soon the whole team would be questioning why things happened the way they did.

You could go that route but for some reason I feel like that leads to a single plot line and then dead-ends. I think the Visionary/Smasher death leads to more story lines down the road. I would rate the deaths as

(1) Visionary/Smasher
(2) Myriad/Wraith
(3) Scatterbrain/Ramjet
(4) Slingshot/Menagerie
(5) Scrap/Supervision

I think the death of Myriad/Wraith was another strong option because his alien race could blame Earth and cause an invasion of sorts and turmoil

Well seeing how things go in Jay's universe, it could be one of the Firebirds too. While not a part of the team, they have definitely integrated themselves in the team. What if Firebird was to get killed helping the team, and little Firebird went all vengeful afterwards. Or the other way around. I think Jay could work it to where any of the sideline players in the D5/Noble Causes universe could die and have a strong impact.
