Even with the ammo issue I'm a big fan of the Bow or Crossbow. For a melee weapon that is tougher to come up with something that's practical or readily available. Otherwise I'd be all in for a long sword or broad sword. Some kind of long spear, even a make shift one would be pretty high on my list. Just think back to medieval times and I think you are on the right track.

Of course this is all speculation so its hard to say for sure but that's half the fun.

Damn, son. You know your shit. So okay, my point was to find some kind of distance, projectile weapon that doesn't have an expiration date, like firearms, as soon as all the ammo is used up. Something with which you could kill a zom without getting close enough where you'd have to use an axe, shovel, hammer, whatever.

Besides military slingshots, anyone else got any ideas?

I didn't just pull those numbers out of my brain, they're easy to find on the internet if you know what to look for. ;)

IMO, best firearm for the zombie apocalypse (a couple years into the mess) is an old flint lock muzzle loader. Not the best for killing zombies, BUT, flint, black powder, and lead balls are a lot easier to make than smokeless powder, primers, and cartridge brass. Will let you kill game like deer and bear at a distance, can be used to defend a walled area, and can be loaded with shot rather than a single round ball and be used for fowling.

Best melee weapon? Warm hammer.

people could make gun powder 1000 years ago, why does everyone think no one would be able to make powder for firearms after the apocalypse? Might have to move back towards flint type black powder weapons, but it can be done.

My biggest thing would be spears. No need to get near (within biting or scratching distance) if you had a spear or halberd. I am surprised no one in ricks group ever thought to have a spear, and it doubles as a walking stick for those long days on the road.

Alternatives you can find in most towns when you have no fire arms... groups could make flame throwers with propane tanks to protect structures, not very portable though. Also... in a permanent setting if you had diesel fuel available you could wipe out extremely large groups of zombies using a bulldozer found at most construction sites.. kinda like the governor did in front of the prison with the tank. a bulldozer could have cleared the walls around Alexandra before they broke through the wall with sheer weight.

Maltov cocktails... where is all the booze at? Bows and arrows... if we could make em 5000 years ago we could do better now.

They could make black powder (which most modern firearms would not be able to function with, even with lots of bullet lube), but smokeless is going to be much more difficult to make. And, even if you could make it, you have no idea what the burn speed is going to be on the powder you produced. Loading up a cartridge with a powder who's burn speed it too fast can mean a gun exploding and taking your hand or face with it.

"which most modern firearms would not be able to function with" which is why I said "Might have to move back towards flint type black powder weapons, but it can be done."

Here... learn this for the zombie apocalypse. You obviously dont know enough rednecks. Black powder grenades with bearing loads would be awesome too.

Another practical weapon I'm surprised that we haven't seen much of is the bayonet.

I'm not so sure about flamethrowers, Molotov cocktails, and other incendiaries. They wouldn't kill the zoms immediately--they'd keep coming toward you, only they'd be on fire. Seems like you'd be multiplying their danger, at least in the short run.

Yep, and waste a lot of precious fuel.

Hillbilly hand grenade sounds like a bad idea too. You need to destroy the brain, not blow arms and legs off.

When they catch on fire and start crackling they will attract other zombies with the noise and shiny lights etc... drawing zombies away from you and maybe even catching more on fire. Hard for them to chase you when the muscle mass starts burning away,
