No, I don't read 2000 AD as a rule. But I ocassionally get a TPB featuring a given character property they publish now and again, if it strikes my fancy. Been telling myself that I'd get an RT collection someday, and this seemed to be the 400 page collection from the very beginning by Finley-Day and Gibbons. And it's 400 pages for $20. Affordable.

I sort of want to read the Gordon Rennie / Dylan Teague version, but then again, I just want to bring Dylan Teague to American comics. (Lord knows he's better than all the Brazilian Jim Lee wannabes DC hires...)

Ah. Yeah some of those Gorden Rennie Rogue strips looked very nice (I'm a big fan of Simon Coleby & PJ Holden). They were all reprinted in Rogue Trooper: Realpolitik (published by Rebellion) which was the 6th 'slim' RT trade before the Tales of Nu-Earth line made them obsolete.

Rogue Trooper is a pretty cool 'future war' series, with some really nice artwork. But IMO is hasn't aged as well as some other 2000 AD series from that era (like, say, Dredd). Finley-Day had some great ideas, but he's one those writers that has his characters say what they are seeing/doing all the time. And that never really goes away.

Still though, its a really sweet collection. I toyed with the idea of picking it up myself, but decided to track down a UK edition because it's trade dress matches my UK edition Dredd Case Files [/tradespineocd]

Also I sort of already own all 6 previous RT trades. So double dip AHOY!

EDIT: Also, you should probably be aware that Dylan Teague only drew one 5-page Rogue Trooper story. And as best I can tell mostly inked Patrick Goddard rather then drew his one strips on stuff he did work on.

Well, if all Dylan did was the one five pager, I've got that in the DC Preview booklet. It's no big deal. I just happen to like Dylan's art.

Glancing through the book as it sits next to my keyboard, it should be an interesting read. Gibbons, Colin Wilson, Brett Ewins, and Cam Kennedy are all solid.

New Comics Shipping the Week of 06-06-12

2000 AD #1776 - Confidently I'm actually reading both these issues right now (because they actually came out a month ago). Dredd Day of Chaos is really heating up. Zaucer of Zilk is sort of bananas. Nikolia Dante is tying up loose ends.
2000 AD #1777 - Age of the Wolf II... feels flaws. Amazing art, great premises (Werewolf Apocalypse) but something just feels rushed about it. I don't know. I think I'll have more to say about it after it concludes.
EXTERMINATION #1 - Simon Spurrier is a fan favorite writer (can't wait to see him return to writing 2000 AD more regularly soon. Post-Apoc Super-Heroes will surely hold me over until then.
FAIREST #4 - This series has apparently turned into a Sleeping Beauty origin story.
GOLD DIGGER #139 - My first regular issue. I ordered this as an experiment to see how difficult it is to jump into a long running series.
JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #322 - Andy Diggle & Jock return for their new series, Snapshot.
MEGA CITY UNDERCOVER VOL 02 - Collects a series called Low Life. One of the best Judge Dredd spin-offs to ever grace 2000 AD. Artwork by D'Israeli is one of the highlight. The writing by Rob Williams is the other.
MUDMAN #4 - Hey! New Mudman! Happy days are here again!

iZombie #26- Just holding on through the end.

Night Force #4 - Ditto.

Trio #2 - #1 was kinda lame, but I like the design of the villain they're going to face in this issue, and Byrne's old Nazi villain Golgotha is showing up, so I'm slightly amused to see where it's going.

Bleeding Cool Magazine #0- Since I regularly go to that site, and Rich Johnston's an all right guy...

2000 AD #1781 - A lot of very interesting things are going down in 2000 AD right now. The end of Nikolia Dante, Judge Dredd Day of Chaos (with PHENOMENAL artwork by Henry Flint. Just check out that 2000 AD 1780 cover. Divine.) And yes... THEY ARE HERE.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #5 - Last issue for me, I want to like Conan comics. But... just not feeling it.
DEMON KNIGHTS #10 - My last issue. I thought last issue was, but apparently I preordered 10 too. Not a bad series, but it just didn't make the cut.
INVINCIBLE #92
JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #323 - The best part about this issue is the reprint of Harry Kipling (Deceased) its bundled with. That was such a great series.
LEGION LOST #10 - With The Culling over lets see what Sir Tom DeFalco can do with this book without editorial interfering crossovers.
PLANETOID #1 - Read this a while back when it was published Digitally. Worth double dipping on is all I'm going to say.
RESURRECTION MAN #10 - Apparently DC is cancelling this series with issue 12 (or rather issue 0 after issue 12). Sad to see it go, its the last non-Legion New 52 title I was reading.

Empty-handed this week. Which was probably for the best; I haven't caught up with the stuff I've gotten recently as I've been dealing with my mother going in and out of the hospital for much of the past month, and all the time-suck and expenses that can incur.

I've been meaning to ask, Jim, but what do you think of Zaucer up to now? It's beautiful, but I find it a bit frustrating to follow in such short (yet brief) bursts. I feel like the story needs more pages to develop, unless it's being made up as it goes along. I AM glad, however, that such a strip is even in there. There's just not enough meat there.

I'm enjoying Zilk a lot. I mean, I can totally see how someone might not like it very much, its sort of just weird for weirdness's sake (which can be fun). Brendan McCarthy was an old favorite Dredd artist from the early days, and did a lot to develop a lot of Dredd's classic look. So really this strip's an excuse for him to return to 2000 AD and draw a bunch of weird stuff (his art style has changed considerably over the last 30 years)

As for the short length, gotta remember I've been reading 2000 AD for 7 years now, so I'm used to it. Actually its gotten to the point that LOVE short form serials. The fact that 2000 AD is weekly really helps (and in the US you usually get your comics in bundles of 2-4 so you're technically reading it in larger chunks anyway). In a given month you get the same amount of content as you would in a monthly stand alone comic, so its more regular then say the Vangard back-up in SD, which is the closest comparison I can think of in terms of format.

Personally I think there's a lot of 'meat' to be had, even in 5-6 page story chunks. 2000 AD writers are all pretty good at page economy, with each installment having their own rising action, climax, and cliffhanger. Zilk has been pretty good with that IMO.

Its definitely not 'being made up as it goes along' 2000 AD runs a pretty tight editorial ship over there. Series have probably been completed in the can for several weeks, if not months, before they run. Since they have a weekly deadline, insuring you have strips to run is paramount.
