So, I’m standing at the urinal and emptying my bladder, when for a moment I give a quick thought to a scene in Waterworld where Kevin Costner pees into a contraption that makes his pee drinkable so that he can survive on a world with only saltwater.

And then came the question.

If they can invent and build a contraption that makes your pee safe to drink, and live on, then why can’t they invent and build a contraption that makes all the damn salt water safe to drink, and live on?

Please keep in mind that I have only seen Waterworld once, and that was when it was in the theaters, so I may be wrong about that scene.

The point of this post isn’t to dissect the movie or to question the writers. It’s to point out how stupid questions can come to you in the oddest moments.

I have that exact same contraption just 'cause I don't trust tap water. I've been drinking the same pint of recycled urine for the last three years.

They can and have invented it.

Just about every ship on the sea has a freshwater generator that converts seawater to potable water or fresh water to use for cooling through evaporation (boiling or flash) or reverse osmosis.
