A Midwinter Night's Dream is the third arc of the four volume MICE TEMPLAR saga of Karic!

Volume III has done something a bit daring for a fantasy saga: between Karic's coma and King Icarus locked away in his own royal tower with handmaiden Alexis, "A Midwinter Night's Dream" has removed both its primary protagonist and antagonist from the story for an entire arc. This has allowed a large cast to alternate in the spotlight...while the impact of both Karic and Icarus remains the impetus for the story.

The first 4 issues set up all the themes for "A Midwinter Night's Dream," while issues 5-8 will each deliver the resolution to one of those themes.

Volume III has set many plot lines in motion...

1. Cassius remaining behind as the sole caretaker of the wounded and comatose Karic.

2. Ronan's bitter rivalry that might cost him his camp and his family.

3. Aquila's rebellious escape, leading her Maeven friends on a daring adventure.

4. Rat Captain Tarnak, and his Mortair mate Nara, seeking to restore lost honor.

5. The druids' struggle to maintain control over the growing rebellion building in the capital city of Dealrach Ard-Vale, while their own allies--the rat army and the weasel royal guard--escalate a bitter rivalry of their own.

6. The brutal rat captain Tosk called to the city to maintain order.

7. Royal Consort Lorelie search to discover the truth of Icarus's fate.

8. Karic's family--Mornae, Gabrielle & friend Elizabeth--hiding in the mysterious home of Naes'pal and E'Tan, under the mysterious protection of "royal privilege," while fellow dungeon escapee Keldra has joined the resistance.

9. "One-Arm" Leito, the treacherous Pilot the Tall, and blind Harad surviving the elements and each other.

10. Templar priest Seamus maintains a delicate balance between serving the corrupt religious order and his loyalty to his faith in Wotan, defrocked high priest Micah, and the growing legend of Karic.

Welcome to "A Midwinter Night's Dream." :D

Some intriguing thoughts from Ed Keener in another thread...

So what did you think of Karic using the demon cat?

Karic has paid a terrible price for using that zombie cat.
We're five issues into Volume III, and he's still not recovered. :o

And that is just proof as to how good this series is. This is the only book that I have ever read that the main protagonist is not in the bulk of the current arc, and yet it's still very good.

I am beginning to wonder though, what will Karic be like when he recovers? Will he have learned his lesson, or will he try to walk the "I just wasn't careful enough" line. How much of an influence does Pilot's initial training still have on him? I know Cassius has made him a better Templar, but with how long he was with Pilot will that still have a lingering effect on the young mouse.

I am very interested to see how Karic and Leito will react when they see each other again, especially since Leito is under the tutelage of Pilot now. I know Lieto had the benifit of Deishun's training long before he ran in to Pilot, but Pilot is a vile mouse. I worry that Leito might be in for a long difficult road. As it is written "Do not be decieved, bad company corrupts good character", so will Pilot sway Leito more than we can know just by his mere presence.

Hmm...things to ponder.

I can reveal that issues 5-8 of Volume III, each contain a crucial step in somebody's arc...
#5 is a big moment for Tosk and the Druids...
#6 is ALL about Cassius...
#7 features a huge Leito turning point...
And #8 brings us back to the fates of both Karic and Icarus!

Wow...looks like all my favorite aspects of the Templar realm are going to be hit upon coming up in the second half of this arc.

I should be able to track down issue 5 this weekend, but I think I may read it all again before then.
