Picked this up today. Did not disappoint. Cool concept. Art suits the tone of the book. I like the fact that Markum is looking for redemption and to do good but is still a little bit of a bad person and badass. He's mostly just selfishly trying to save himself but he's going to do good while he's at it. Strong first issue.

i'll stick with the book to see where the series goes for now...

Hey, Jay- would it be safe to say that there could be potential for Dodge to make a cameo- it is seattle...

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!

My only complaint about this ish is it threw in characters too quickly, and without enough background info. I'd really like to know why Markham is a hitman. Why is Sutton so supportive of him? Doesn't she feel conflicted being a doctor who saves a hitman?

Did Markham really kill those dozens of people?

I'd really like to go into more detail of Markham's dream that turned him around. I just felt there should be more depth into his conversion from a hitman to a savior. He's kinda like St. Paul who went from a Christian hating Orthodox Jew to one of the most zealous followers of Christianity after his conversion.

Otherwise, I like the story. Markham seems to have let his job detach himself from humanity, which is why he has a difficult time feeling anything for that woman he saved. Maybe being a savior is just like a job to him, like being a hitman was. Perhaps Sutton's intrigued by him in a bad boy kind of way. Who knows? I'll be reading more to figure this out.

I got two crime recommendations. Nonfiction: Tokyo Vice, about an American journalist working for the biggest newspaper in Japan (one of the few foreigners to ever work for a Japanese newspaper). He covers crime in Japan: this includes a married man who tells his wife his works for a big company, but is secretly unemployed, and spends his days as a pickpocket, sometimes making thousands of dollars in one day; to middle-aged date rapists who prey on foreign sex slaves; to the Yakuza, who chainsaw their victims in half. It also features insight to the quirky life of a foreigner living in Japan.

Fiction: Death of a Citizen by Donald Hamilton. This is the first book in the Matt Helm series, which is seriously underrated.
