I understand you like to send samples of your lettering? As far as I know Image does not hire individual letterers (or artist/colorists/writer), only publishes complete projects.

The answer, friend, can be found in the submissions guidelines:

The guidelines wrote:
WE DO ACCEPT inking, pencilling, lettering, or coloring samples. We'll keep them on file and may hook you up with other creators if and when the occasion presents itself.

Ah..okay. My bad. I guess they changed it.

Hehe!

No problem, Bendrix. I'm just a little confused that no further guidelines were stated for submissions in those categories.

But hey - maybe I'm over-thinking this.

Technically, they still don't hire letterers, but they might hook you up with a creator looking for one, which is great (and something people where asking for for a long time).
Maybe. The bottom line is, if you are good, and your samples show it, the probably keep you.

Thanks for the prompt reply Adam.

What would be a small file size for a fully illustrated 158 page graphic novel? I had my letterer create an 34 mb file that was a really good quality mock up, that I was happy with on CS4, but once we finished the final revisions he couldn't create the same pdf file again. He switched to CS 5 and the smallest size he can put together is a 34 mb file and it's distorted. It doesn't have retain the higher resolution of the original file. I had a professional print house put together a 47 mb version of it, interestingly enough it doesn't have as good of a quality as the initial 34 mb file that was put together on CS4.

I really want to email all 158 pages and the cover, but stupid emails have attachment limits. Any suggestions?

Send hard copies.

Okay, I don't want to be a bother or anything, but in the event that the submissions email is full and bounces back my email, what would be the best way to alert the appropriate parties that the email inbox is jammed full?

Because that's totally happening right now.

Your options:

Make a copy of your submission. Mail it in.

Or...

Wait until the email is no longer full and email it.

I'm assuming we're expected to have licenses for all the fonts we use. How do you guys deal with creators and their use of fonts?

Not speaking for Image -- but yes, in all likelihood most fonts you'd be using in an Image title will have agreement terms (usually packaged with the fonts) which require you to obtain licenses in the event of commercial use. It's the responsibility of the creator to make sure things are on the up and up -- but it's kind of something that nobody needs to worry about until they've had a pitch accepted.

With Blambot specifically -- their free fonts only require license fees if the fonts are being published in a book from a mainstream publisher. Small press books are allowed to use the free fonts without paying licensing fees.

So, just as an example, if I had a pitch that Image rejected and I opted instead to self-publish (or otherwise publish the book through a smaller publisher), those free fonts would stay free. If my pitch was accepted -- then that would be the time to acquire licenses for whichever fonts needed them.
