Alias the Spider also featured in Starman and Seven Soldiers.

They are Public Domain because Quality and DC didn't renew the copyright on many of the characters.

Apparently Plastic Man may be in the public domain too.

I hadn't really considered it before but I imagine ALL the Quality heroes are public domain. DC uses derivative versions with no ties to the originals so they probably only own the trademarks. (And this would explain why the Freedom Fighters were mostly wiped out in Infinite Crisis.)

From what I know--ALL of the Quality characters are in the public domain but DC has registered the name Plastic Man so they own the trademark. DC is owned by Warner and would be unlikely to let folks get away with using him though and would be likely to fight tooth and nail. Theoretically we could publish the next issue of Police Comics and use Plastic Man in it (calling him "Plas" on the cover, sine we couldn't call him Plastic Man). We could called him Plastic Man on the interior of the book just as we call Daredevil by name on the interior pages of Savage Dragon and Silver Streak Comics.

But I'd think THAT would be pushing it.

Did Crack Comics 63 have a variant cover? I was looking at the inside back cover of Savage Dragon 175 and their was as thumbnail of the Crack Comics cover that has Captain Triumph by what looks like Alan Weiss's artwork. Whereas the cover I purchessed has Captain Triumph and The Clock drawn by unmistakably Mike Allred.

Yeah--there were two covers. One by Allred--one by Weiss.

ARGH, damn. My shop only got one copy and I scooped it up... it was Weiss. Allred's a favorite and I would have vastly preferred his cover (not that Weiss' was bad).

Looks like my comicshop missed ordering mine. I hope he can still order it for me.

I had to remind my store about it. It was over a year ago so he'd forgotten. I ordered both covers so hopefully I get them both.

I didn't really want to go into the alternate cover game on this book but I had the one from Allred drawn up a long time ago and since Weiss was doing the lead he wanted to do a cover. It just seemed like the best option. I didn't want to not use what Mike did.

I gotcha, I'm just bummed I didn't get to snap up the Allred one instead.
