Interestingly enough--I never pasted this cover up. Somebody recreated the lettering from #84 and pasted it up after I had sold it at some charity auction.
Hey Erik, are you sure about this? I just read this on Mark Welser's old fansite:
"This was originally intended to be the cover to 84 but was later changed to be the Pittsburgh Comicon variant cover to issue 85. As it turned out, Erik got sick and couldn't make the show and ended up running this as a pin up instead."
It seems very plausible, seeing how well it was done.
Very few of my covers have been pasted up. Most of them are put together in Photoshop and the originals are pure art--no logo--no trade dress. The logo and trade dress on this art is based on the trade dress for #84. Whoever did it--got the comic and recreated it, based on the printed book. This could not have been used on a printed book--the caption at the bottom is too close to the edge and there's no bleed. If printed it would have gotten cut off. Similarly, the Image Comics Group banner at the top should extend to the edge of the art--not end abruptly. In print there would be a chance that you'd see that end instead of it reaching the edge of the printed book. So...yes, I am sure I never pasted it up.
The rest is correct. It was drawn as a cover and would have been a variant con edition cover (with different text--dialogue--I recall it being something like: "It's--it's--some kind of monster!" and Dragon saying, "That's no monster--that's my biggest fan!").
