Actually that plot thread makes me feel he has plot immunity at the moment, but if Ann dies in the crossfire it could be the catalyst to tip him over the edge to pure super-villain. One with his very own young, impressionable Mighty Man in his back-pocket I might add.

Yeah, his wife died and he becomes obsessed with staying alive to keep his daughter safe... Even if that means he has to drain a kid of his blood...

I think that's pretty much the case. Think of the guys in the ships (in Vanguard) as being a different subspecies (and different rank, in all likelihood) than the ones attacking Earth's surface. This could account for the disparities in personality, physical appearance, etc.

Maybe what's going to happen is one of those Larsen moments when a big cliffhanger builds up to a very quick, low-key resolution in the very next issue. Like that time when demon-Overlord appeared after the Spawn/Dragon crossover and we were sure he was going to kick Dragon's ass... But Dragon bit off his finger and threw him in the hellpits in two panels, squat. Or when William Jonson's brother opened his closet to reveal Overlord's armor (I'm only thinking of Overlord-related examples, for some reason) and we all thought "OMG he's going to put on the armor and kick ass" but instead, somebody else was wearing the armor and he killed William's brother and that was *it* with this subplot.

So maybe the first page of the next issue will be :

(Splash page) Malcolm : "Are you KIDDING?"

Second page :
Angel : ... Yes.
Malcolm : ...
Angel : But you did hesitate for a second, you big perv. Eww!
Malcolm: Oh, shut up! Let's go kick some alien ass...!
Angel : I'm with you on that, *little brother*.
Malcolm: Dammit!

That would be pretty funny, but I think she's being serious. Her character is pretty insecure.
