For some reason the middle point in the "W" being shorter really bugs me, but beyond that: neat!

The black and white version at the link above is nice too. It's cool to see it before all the color effects were added.

I wish the interiors of spawn looked like that cover.

I'd love to see Todd do finishes over Erik's work more as they really gel.

I like how the cape is positioned to look like a 5-segmented fin.

Ha, thank you for pointing this out to me. That is so cool.

This is awesome.

I have to admit that is pretty awesome. Is McFarlane drawing this issue?

No. Just writing and cover. I heard he was writing it since 201 under a pen name. Wonder if there is something to it.

He's been writing the book since the start of "Endgame", I think #185 is the issue. With the 200th, they announced a new creative team of Will Carlton writer and Syzmon Kudranski artist would take over with 201. I guess to drum up interest and create a "jumping on" point. Recently they revealed that Carlton IS Mcfarlane so he has been writing consistently for 34 issues or so. Kudranski has done some DC work including a Penguin mini and some backups in the Batman titles. I really like his art, a photorealistic style that is almost totally different from Todd's. Like most of you I dumped Spawn in the 20's and didn't pick up an issue again until the 190's. I've stayed on board and will say that I've really enjoyed it from 201 onward. Its a better book than it gets credit for. And these anniversary covers are awesome.

Out of curiosity, does anybody know why Todd limited it to just Youngblood and Savage Dragon?

What about WildCATs, Shadowhawk, and Cyberforce?

Is it confirmed anywhere that YB & SD are the only ones? I thought subsequent issues would feature more homage covers. I know he's also doing non-Image homages (like Amazing Fantasy 15), but seeing as how it's the company's 20th anniversary all year long, I was under the impression the Image-centric variants weren't limited just to issue 220.

Anyway, I don't know, but I was expecting others (though I would bet against Wildcats being among them).

By the way, whatever happened to Spawn?

In the 90s, the series was a top ten book in sales, had the animated series, live-action movie, etc.

Now, you barely ever hear about the character anymore... when did he lose all his popularity?

Just doing a quick search on the Comichron sales figures... looks like Spawn started dropping out of the top ten around February of 2001, not too long after #100.

Looks like the August solicits answered this question:
